The Road Ahead Partnership has announced two new Official Route 66 Centennial projects.
The two new programs are “Seen on 66” and the “Route 66 Centennial Immersive Experience Project.”
Seen on 66 invites anyone who has traveled the Mother Road to contribute photos they have taken, which will be added to a public archive and made freely available to all.
A dedicated section will be created on route66centennial.org where participants can upload their Route 66 photos and formally release them under the Creative Commons CC0 1.0 Universal license, waiving all rights and restrictions.
The Seen on 66 project will provide global access to a set of Route 66 images celebrating the centennial.
Bill Thomas, Chairman of The Road Ahead Partnership, said, “This is not just a photo gallery. It’s a gift to future generations; a visual time capsule of the places and people that make up Route 66.”
The Route 66 Centennial Immersive Experience Project consists of three immersive 360 dome theaters that will be in Springfield, Missouri, Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Santa Monica, California.
The theaters will feature daytime screenings of a 20-minute signature film that showcases the iconic stops, neon-lit motels, and quirky roadside attractions of Route 66. An additional family entertainment film, Mesmerica, will run in the evenings. The domes also aim to stimulate economic development in all attraction locations.
To date, 36 Official Route 66 Centennial projects have been approved by The Road Ahead Partnership. For more information, check out the Route 66 Centennial Website.
