Bloomington-Normal, IL 5/13/26 – In partnership with the Illinois State University School of Creative Technologies, VisitBN is proud to announce the Projection Mapping Project – an immersive visual experience that brings the story of U.S. Route 66 to life through large scale digital storytelling.

The projection mapping installation will debut on Saturday, June 6, 2026, at 6 p.m., transforming the exterior of the McLean County Museum of History into a dynamic, 360 degree canvas.
Facilitated by VisitBN in collaboration with faculty from Illinois State University’s School of Creative Technologies, the experience will showcase the cultural and historical significance of Route 66 through a curated blend of imagery, archival materials, and animated visuals.
The installation is designed to illuminate all four sides of the museum building, creating a fully immersive environment for attendees in downtown Bloomington.
“This project is a powerful example of what happens when creativity, community, and storytelling intersect,” said Melissa Chrisman, CEO at VisitBN. “As part of our Route 66 Centennial celebration, we wanted to create something that doesn’t just tell the story of the Mother Road – but lets people experience it in a completely new way.”

“This has been an incredibly fun and rewarding project,” said Simone Downie, Assistant Professor of Game Design and Animation in the School of Creative Technologies at Illinois State University. “Bringing this vision to life through projection mapping has allowed us to merge technical skill with creative storytelling in a way that feels both innovative and deeply connected to the community.”

The June 6 debut is part of VisitBN’s ‘Cruisin’ Through the Century’ weekend, a county wide celebration marking 100 years of Route 66. The projection mapping installation will serve as a signature visual centerpiece, inviting residents and visitors alike to engage with the legacy of the historic highway in an entirely new format.
