Illinois Route 66 Scenic Byway

The National Woman’s Relief Corps (WRC), Auxiliary to the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR), is pleased to announce that the GAR Memorial Museum will reopen in July. The Museum, located at 629 So. 7th Street in Springfield, IL, will resume regular hours from 10am to 4pm Thursday-Saturday beginning Thursday, July 1, 2021.

Additionally, the GAR Museum will be open on Sunday, the 4th of July, as well. We will give free souvenir 8”x12” USA stick flags to the first 25 visitors that day. New and updated displays will feature a 34-star US flag that was made and presented to Company G, 30th Indiana Volunteer Infantry in July 1861 by the “ladies of Lima, Indiana.” It was carried through the Civil War and bears the scars of combat from battles including Shiloh, Perryville, Chickamauga, Atlanta, and Kenesaw Mountain. The 4’ x 8’ flag has had preservation work done by the Illinois State Military Museum. It was mounted & framed for display.

Museum collections include artifacts, documents & photographs from the era of the American Civil War. Many items that document the history of the Grand Army of the Republic and the Woman’s Relief Corps are also on display. We encourage everyone to stop in during our open hours and remind you that admission is always free and donations are welcome! The GAR Memorial Museum receives no Federal, State or Municipal funding but is sustained the generosity of the members of the WRC and the visiting public. If no restrictions are again in place after July 1st, the Museum will remain open with regular hours until Saturday, Oct. 30, 2021.
