Atlanta IL, October 28, 2026 – A rare Futuro House, a futuristic, flying-saucer-shaped structure designed in Finland during the 1960s, has been acquired by Lee Woods and is expected to arrive in Atlanta, Illinois, in November 2026.
The distinctive structure will be displayed on a museum-owned lot across the street from the American Giants Museum. The Astro Man giant, currently located on the museum grounds, will be relocated next to the Futuro House. Together, the two eye-catching structures will create a distinctive new roadside attraction for visitors traveling historic Route 66.
The Futuro House will complement the museum as a separate attraction celebrating the imaginative roadside architecture and Americana associated with the historic highway.
Designed by Finnish architect Matti Suuronen, the Futuro House emerged during an era of widespread fascination with space exploration and futuristic design. Its distinctive rounded form, elevated entrance, and resemblance to a flying saucer made it one of the most recognizable examples of experimental architecture of the period.
Fewer than 100 Futuro Houses were reportedly manufactured, and only around 60 are believed to survive worldwide, making each surviving example a distinctive piece of architectural and design history.
For Lee Woods and his wife, Diane, acquiring a Futuro House represents the culmination of a decade-long search.
“Diane and I have been looking for a Futuro House for nearly 10 years, so we’re really excited to finally bring one to Atlanta,” said Lee Woods. “What makes this one especially special is how much of its original interior has survived. We’ve always loved the unusual roadside attractions that made Route 66 famous, and the Futuro House certainly fits that tradition.
“By placing it across from the American Giants Museum, alongside our Astro Man giant, we’re creating another reason for travelers to stop, explore, and spend time in Atlanta. We want to keep adding things that make people say, ‘We’ve got to stop and see that.’”
The Futuro House is expected to arrive in Atlanta in November 2026.
