Virden Prepares for Route 66 Centennial with New Downtown Mural

Illinois Route 66 Scenic Byway

Virden, IL – With the 100th birthday of Historic Route 66 quickly approaching, the Virden community is proud to announce plans for a new mural that will celebrate both the town’s rich history and its connection to this legendary highway. The mural will be located on the side of the Sav-Mor building, which sits prominently along the Illinois Route 66 Scenic Byway in downtown Virden.

This new piece of public art will be created by renowned mural artist Bernie Gietl of Carlinville, whose work is well-known across the region. The mural design highlights Virden’s distinctive drag racing history, paying tribute to local legends Stan Lomelino, a flathead drag racer, and Joe Hendricks, a fellow drag-strip racer who helped put Macoupin County and the Virden community on the map. The project also celebrates the vibrant spirit of the Central Illinois Route 66 Scenic Drive.

“A new mural in Virden is more than just a beautiful addition—it’s a powerful symbol of community pride and a vibrant invitation to travelers as we prepare for the Route 66 Centennial,” said project organizers. “This mural will celebrate our unique history, draw visitors downtown, and support local businesses by enhancing the visual appeal of our town.”

The total cost of the mural project is $7,500. The North Mac FFA is serving as the project’s non-profit partner and is accepting donations on behalf of the effort. The Virden Hot Rod Club, the Virden Chamber of Commerce, the Illinois Route 66 Scenic Byway, Sav-Mor Pharmacy and local businesses, and community supporters are also proud partners in bringing this historic mural to life.
