10th Annual Get Your 6.6 on Route 66 run/walk
August 26 @ 8:00 am - 12:00 pm
McLean, IL – Participants can get their kicks on Route 66 in this much-anticipated 6.6k (4.1-mile) run/walk from Funks Grove to McLean on Saturday, August 26, 2023! Registrants receive a super-soft cotton t-shirt with this year’s unique design, brunch and drink tickets, a commemorative shot glass, and other gifts from sponsors.
Participants are shuttled by First Student buses from McLean to Funks Grove Pure Maple Sirup for sign-in, where they are invited to take a complimentary shot of maple sirup for a quick boost of energy for their journey down the Mother Road! Runners and walkers take off at 8 am on the USATF-certified course with water stations every mile, making their way to the finish line just off the McLean village square. There they can pick up their swag, which includes this year’s t-shirts designed by McLean resident artist Grace Springer and printed by A Perfect Promotion, and check out the park full of native plants under the old water tower, made possible by proceeds from the run/walk in cooperation with the Village of McLean.
“From the pre-race shot of sirup (I had two) to the post-race party to the people honking at us from I-55 to the great bag of swag and t-shirt, this was one really good race,” commented David Joens of Springfield, Ill. “My one claim to fame as a runner is that I have run a race in each of Illinois’ 102 counties. So I know a little bit about races and this one was a really good one.”
After the run/walk, participants and the general public are invited to the McLean village square for a celebration! Chubby’s Bar and Grill of Atlanta and Hink’s Smokehouse of Bloomington will be set up selling breakfast, lunch, and drinks, and run/walk participants receive a voucher for breakfast and a drink from Chubby’s! There will also be ice cream and cookies from the Atlanta 4-H Club and lemon shake-ups for sale. Overall winners and first-and second-place finishers in 11 age groups (male and female) will receive awards, and we’re bringing back our surprise awards, sponsored by Fleet Feet, for participants who finish 6th in their age groups! Other festivities on the square will last from 8 am to 1 pm and include music by E-Man Productions, a custom photo backdrop to prove that you “got your 6.6!” hosted by race photographer Diane Greene, adoptable dogs and a silent auction provided by Ruby’s Rescue & Retreat, bingo, lawn games, a craft and book sale at the Mt. Hope-Funks Grove Library, and a classic car show by Mid State Cruisers.
“I have run several races and this was right up at the top in terms of organization and extremely well run,” says Randi Krehbiel of Hopedale, Ill. “What a fun day!”
This 6.6k (4.1-mile) run/walk, which raises funds for projects in the community of McLean, is organized by the CORE of McLean, a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization comprising a small group of volunteers, with the generous help and support of those mentioned above as well as the McLean Depot, The Atlanta National Bank, Green Top Grocery, The UPS Store, Wm. Masters, Quiram-Peasley Funeral Home, Kabir Center for Health, and Rightspace Properties.
