Virden Country Christmas – Santa’s Workshop!

Our amazing small businesses and neighbors have come together to support this holiday celebration — and we can’t wait to share the magic with you.

During the Virden Country Christmas, on December 5 th , at 5:00 a ribbon cutting will celebrate the new mural honoring Virden’s drag racing history along Route 66.
With the 100th birthday of Historic Route 66 quickly approaching, the mural celebrates both the town’s rich history and its connection to this legendary highway. Located on the side of the Sav-Mor building, along Illinois Route 66 Scenic Byway, the location is between the two businesses Lomelinos and Hendricks Home Furnishings. The mural was completed by renowned mural artist Bernie Gietl of Carlinville. Bernie was assisted by his wife, DL Whitlock Gietl, Noella Martinez-Voigt, Peter Gietl, and Hannah Gietl.
North Mac FFA handled funds for this project that was headed up by FFA leader and ag teacher, Logan Runyen. Thanks to the many doners along with North Mac FFA, The City of Virden, Virden Hot Rod Club, the Virden Chamber of Commerce, Illinois Route 66 Scenic Byway, Sav-Mor Pharmacy, local businesses, and community supporters. Come out and celebrate this fascinating history in the heart of Macoupin County. Questions, contact Cindy Ladage at 217-741-9509, or email at cindy.ladage@royell.org.
