July 5 @ 9:00 am - 5:00 pm

McLean County Museum

Bloomington- On Monday, July 5th from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., the Museum will offer free admission to the public in celebration of our Nation’s Independence Day. On display in the Rotunda will be a replica regimental flag for the 33rd Illinois Infantry Regiment. The 33rd Illinois Volunteer Regiment was raised by Charles Hovey, the first president of Illinois State Normal University, during the summer of 1861.

Also known as the “Teacher’s Regiment,” the regiment consisted mostly of students, faculty, and administrators of the University. Joseph W. Fifer, the 19th Governor of Illinois, was a member of this regiment. The regimental flag is on loan from the Jo Ann Rayfield Archives at Illinois State University. All exhibit galleries and the Cruisin’ with Lincoln on 66 Visitors Center will be open. For more information email marketing@mchistory.org or call (309) 827-0428.
