Schwartz\, whose work was selected for the official USPS Route 66 Centennial commemorative stamps. \nFor more than two decades\, Schwartz has traveled the length of Route 66\, documenting the people\, places\, and quiet moments that give the Mother Road its enduring spirit. His photographs move beyond nostalgia\, capturing Route 66 as a living highway shaped by the communities and individuals who continue to care for it today. \nPresented in partnership with Visit Springfield\, this exhibition brings together a curated selection of Schwartz’s photographs reflecting the landscape\, roadside architecture\, and cultural life found along America’s most celebrated highway. \nThe exhibition is installed at The Pharmacy Gallery in downtown Springfield\, where it hangs alongside an exhibition honoring the work of legendary Route 66 artist Bob Waldmire\, creating a rare opportunity to experience two generations of artistic interpretation of the Mother Road in the same space. \nVisitors will encounter images drawn from Schwartz’s extensive Route 66 archive\, built over more than 40 trips along the historic highway\, each photograph rooted in firsthand experience of the road and the people who keep its spirit alive. \nRoute 66 is not something preserved behind glass or held back by a velvet rope. It is a living road that travelers can step into\, experience for themselves\, and help sustain for generations to come. \nThe exhibition opened on March 27\, 2026\, and will remain on view through December 31\, 2026.

The exhibition brings to life the experience of living\,\nworking and traveling along U.S. Route 66 during its heyday. \nThe exhibit incorporates the museum’s Route 66 Oral History Project\, a collection of 100 interviews with people\nwho experienced the road when it served as the primary route between Chicago and Los Angeles. Visitors can\nlisten to excerpts from these firsthand accounts throughout the exhibit. \nOn display will be a range of Route 66 memorabilia\, including vintage souvenirs\, neon signs\, fiberglass advertising\nfigures and Burma-Shave signs. \n“This exhibit is a must-see for any fan of Route 66\,” said ISM curator of history Erika Holst. “What sets it apart is\nthe opportunity to hear memories of the Mother Road in the voices of the people who lived it.” \n\nCommissioned in 1926\, Route 66 was promoted as the shortest\, best and most scenic route between Chicago and\nLos Angeles. It served as a major corridor to the West Coast for decades until the development of the federal\ninterstate system. Renewed interest in the late 20th century transformed Route 66 into a popular road trip\ndestination\, now attracting millions of visitors from around the world each year. The highway marks its centennial\nanniversary this year. \n“Some of the stories featured in the exhibit cover topics that even seasoned Route 66 travelers may not have heard\nbefore\,” said ISM registrar of history Amanda Bryden. “There is something for everyone\, regardless of\nfamiliarity with the road.” \nThe project was made possible through support from the Illinois State Museum Society\, the Hanson family\, Jane\nand Paul Ford and Loken Family funds at the Community Foundation for the Land of Lincoln\, in partnership with\nthe Lumpkin Foundation\, Stifel and the Cozy Dog Drive In. \n“Miles of Memories” will be on view through April 4\, 2027. This juried event specializes in all items made prior to 1985. \nThe Litchfield Pickers Market is held every second Sunday of each month\, May through October from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. in downtown Litchfield\, Illinois (beginning on the corner of Route 16/Union Avenue and State Street. Use 400 N. State Street for your GPS). All items sold at this market were produced prior to 1985 (including antiques\, collectibles\, vintage items\, upcycled items and refurbished items). Vendors must follow specific guidelines and pre-registration is required to be a vendor. Please scroll down for the registration forms There is no entry fee or parking fee for visitors. \nWe would love for you to join the festivities! To make your trip the best it can be\, we have some recommendations for first time visitors. \nBring carts\, totes\, trucks\, wagons\, etc. to haul your treasures. With no entry fee and multiple access points you can park almost anywhere around the perimeter of the market for easy entrance\, however please adhere to “No Parking” signs in select areas. \nFood booths are located at all the intersections on State Street and a complete listing of food booths can be found below. \nLive music is held in Library Park so you may want to put a lawn chair or blanket in your car so you can sit and relax. \nWhen you attend the market be sure to sign the guest book located at the Tourism Information booth in front of the Carnegie Building’s flag pole on the corner of Union Ave./Route 16 and State Street. DESCRIPTION:Bicycle Illinois is excited to introduce the Route 66 Ride\, a new week-long cycling tour traveling from the St. Louis area to Chicagoland along the legendary Old Route 66. This tour is still in development\, and registration is not yet open\, but riders are encouraged to stay tuned for updates as plans continue to progress. \nExperience the Mother Road on two wheels as you pedal through historic Route 66 towns\, open farmland\, and classic roadside Americana. Vintage gas stations\, diners\, museums\, and glowing neon signs evoke the nostalgia of America’s golden age of travel. With gentle terrain and lightly traveled roads\, this route offers a relaxed yet rewarding cycling adventure filled with history\, local hospitality\, and timeless charm. This fully supported\, all-hotel tour is a perfect way to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Route 66 and America’s 250th birthday. \nThe cycling route will follow original alignments of Route 66 whenever safe and enjoyable\, with detours around high-traffic areas such as I-55 and Memorial Parkway in Springfield. Bicycle Illinois is working with local Route 66 organizations to identify historic and quirky attractions along the way\, many of which will serve as ride stops. \nThe tour is tentatively scheduled for September 19–27\, 2026\, and will include optional transportation days\, six or seven riding days\, and a layover day in Springfield to explore Abraham Lincoln historic sites. Total mileage is approximately 350 miles\, averaging about 60 miles per day\, with all details subject to change. \nRegistration will include hotel lodging\, SAG support\, baggage transport\, Ride with GPS navigation\, access to mechanical support\, and a complimentary pair of Bicycle Illinois cycling socks. Optional transportation\, long-term parking\, and merchandise will be available. Riders are responsible for lunches and dinners. Future tours may include a Chicago extension or camping options.
