Palms Grill Cafe in Atlanta Honored with "Enjoy Illinois: Delicious Destination" Award

The Palms Grill Cafe in Atlanta has received an "Enjoy Illinois: Delicious Destination" award. The announcement was made on December 8th by the Illinois Office of Tourism and the Logan County Tourism Bureau. The award is designated to restaurants that are "beloved destinations for visitors and locals alike," according to a joint press release from both agencies.

“From family-owned restaurants with long and storied histories to the hottest new cuisines in the world, Illinois has emerged as a premier culinary destination for both domestic and international visitors,” said Jen Hoelzle, Illinois State Travel Director. “The ‘Enjoy Illinois: Delicious Destination’ award honors those restaurants that are authentically Illinois, making a trip to the state unforgettable.”

The diner originally opened in 1934 in downtown Atlanta on the original alignment of Route 66, and was meticulously restored through the efforts of the Atlanta Public Library and Museum, and re-opened in 2009.

Previously, the Palms Grill won awards for their pie-making at the Illinois State Fair and by the Illinois Office of Tourism. The classic Route 66 diner was also inducted into the Route 66 Association Hall of Fame in 2013.

The announcement of the "Delicious Destination" award also revealed interesting information about what brings visitors to the state: "According to a 2013 D.K. Shifflet & Associates Study, nearly one third of leisure travelers to Illinois reported participating in a unique 'culinary experience' as a key part of their vacation, proving culinary offerings are a key motivator for travel."
