The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) announced on February 16, 2021, that Route 66 in Missouri & California Route 66 (Needles to Barstow Section) have received National Scenic Byway designations. They were part of 34 National Scenic Byways and 15 All-American Roads designated in 28 states. This increases the number of Byways to 184 in 48 states. These are the first additions to the National Scenic Byway program since 2009. The Illinois Route 66 Scenic Byway was the first of the Route 66 states to have their portion of Route 66 designated as a National Scenic Byway in 2005.
The United States Department of Transportation has designated certain U.S. roads as National Scenic Byways because of their special significance to the American people. The Illinois Route 66 Scenic Byway congratulates Missouri and California for their National Scenic Byway designations.
The designations come in advance of the Centennial for Route 66 – the most famous road in the world – in the year 2026. Recently, legislation was passed of the federal level that establishes a National Route 66 Centennial Commission. The state of Illinois is also putting together an Illinois Route 66 Centennial Commission as well.
